Secret Garden

This project was conceived in response to a new imposing extension built by a neighbour.

In order to mitigate the over bearing effect of the neighbours new structure, an existing smaller extension on the ground floor was replaced by a new extension covering the full width of the site and to the extent of the neighbours addition.

An inner ‘hidden’ courtyard is created between the neighbour’s proposed extension, the new extension and the house itself. 


The main feature of the extension will be its geometry which is designed as a ‘crank’ to re-align the axis of the house with that of the garden.

The sloping roof, which opens up to the South East towards the garden has vertical openings will let in natural daylight deep into the plan.

The inner ‘hidden’ garden flank wall is clad in mirror, to reflect light and the garden scenery into the original house and new extension, creating an illusion of an endless back garden.

The sloping double curved roof surfaces are covered with brick pavers (a first) and help the new extension morph within it’s brick setting.
